The Fox and the Grapes-Bilingual English and French is one of Aesop’s famous fables, giving us that well-known saying “That’s just sour grapes!”. In this retelling, the original hungry fox is now a thirsty one whose thirst increases as the sun gets bigger and hotter. Unfortunately, the ending for the Fox is the same – he doesn’t reach those delicious, juicy grapes hanging just out of reach and stomps off in a bad mood declaring them too sour.

With a short, repetitive text and bold, humorous illustrations, this is a great way to start learning about Aesop’s fables.

Dylan Gibson’s vivid illustrations are full of wonderful things to look at. As the Fox tries again and again to reach the grapes, all around other animals are busy doing their own thing. The hedgehogs will have readers laughing out loud as they get ever closer, watching the Fox. The smallest hedgehog’s attempt to help the Fox provides great new possibilities for discussion on top of the question of how we should deal with not getting what we want.

Retold by Pauline Mackay; illustrated by Dylan Gibson; translated by Audrey Langlassé
